In the last year or so, there have been some big changes in handlaunch and F3K glider flying techniques and technology. I have developed a new educational series called the Handlaunch Master Class which will help you learn about the latest flying, building, and design trends which are having a big impact on the sport.

The hot pilot in North America right now is Bruce Davidson, and he is helping to teach this fascinating new DVD series.

A fresh off of his 2009 win at the prestigious International HLG Festival and good placing in the German F3K Open, Bruce shares his latest tips and techniques for getting the most from your high performance HLG in the first Master Class. Bruce is not only a talented pilot but is also an experienced teacher who explains and demonstrates subjects clearly so you can quickly learn and apply the lessons to your flying.

Not many pilots in the world can launch as high as Bruce, and you will learn his tips on maximizing your launch energy no matter your age or skill level. Slow motion video from many angles helps you see his tuned launch mechanics in action. You will certainly improve your launches after Bruce shows you how to spin with power.

Things You Will Learn More About:

• Flying Rudderless Planes • Set Up Tips • All About Throwing Blades • Radio Set Up • Throwing Mechanics Seminar • Flight Demos For CG and Decalage • Thermaling Tips • Launch Techniques • Ballasting For Wind • Controlling Energy and Landing Speed • Practice Techniques

Flying without a rudder is a hot new trend and Bruce shows you the advantages of going rudderless and the specialized tuning it takes to make this all work. It really works! You will see Bruce fly his Sirius, an all carbon rudderless F3K model designed by Europe's top champions.

You will also learn some great air reading and thermaling tips from the extensive flight demos Bruce flies with full commentary so you can understand how and why he flies the way he does. Other flight demos show how to find the optimum CG and decalage, cambering, cross wind launches, finding lift downwind, and practice workouts. If you are flying contests or are thinking of entering one to test your skills, the Master Class will help you develop the skills you will need to stay off the bottom of the score sheet.

Don't be intimidated by the DVD's high performance content because there is plenty of good information for the beginner and intermediate pilot. If you have studied my HLG Pro Clinic, you are totally ready for the HLG Master Class 1.

  1. State of the Art in F3K

Posted by Dave Termohlen on 13th Oct 2009

This video is a perfect example of the state of the art in 2009. The latest techniques from a great teacher (Bruce Davidson)... and the latest toys from Europe... MMT's spread-tow... all carbon... Sirius!

Paul, with your expert video editing techniques... you need to flip the video for us right-handers ;-) It does seem a little funny at times watching the techiniques of a lefty.

    GREAT VIDEO!!!!

Got the DVD in the mail today and sat aside my Predator II build to have a bit of quality time with Bruce. It is vintage Bruce Davidson. Much like one of his clinics, only much more in depth. I can say that for me, I got my money's worth several times over. I can't think of any way short of personal tutoring that I could have learned more about flying DLGs. It didn't seem to change much of the way I now fly, but just seems to fill in a lot that. I've been missing or not thinking about. I now have some new goals and ways to try and reach them. I expect to view this video a couple of more times this weekend. - Walt

"Got my HL Master Class 1 yesterday, and watched it this morning. I would say this DVD should be mandatory viewing - especially for beginning DLGers (such as myself). Like I said, I'm a newbie, but am fairly analytic in nature. This video confirmed a lot of what I've concluded myself - and I suspect most folk with a couple of years under their belt will find much of it to be "obvious". But for beginners, it has the best descriptions and examples of critical issues like launch technique, launch presets, CG location, lift indication and basic thermal hunting that I've ever seen.

I'm not sure I agree with 100% of the advice (e.g., I like to put nose weight my batteries, so that swapping battery packs will always guarantee proper balance...) but there were lots of tips in there I simply hadn't thought of (e.g., mark the fuselage with the balance location - awesome!) - Matt Nelson

Paul: great selection of topics and generally very nice camera work. Just the right amount of time spent on each chapter. The overhead shots were a nice touch. Only two nits: I'd have liked to see a little more on energy management with flaperons - e.g., approach angle selection, and when exactly to hit the brakes (mostly because I screw that up so often!). Also, each scene transition had "F3K" in the background, but it was never defined - most of us know what it is, but still..

Bruce: I've never had the pleasure of attending one of your clinics, but I gotta say you provided excellent narration while flying - commenting on whether glider bumps were you or the air, pointing out the indicators, and filling time with good strategic comments. You have a natural knack for instruction. -Matt

WOW! Great job Bruce and Paul got mine yesterday and watched just awesome. Thanks for a great guide to DLG." -Steve Maxwell

Watched mine yesterday and I'd say it's A1. Thanks for the great advice Bruce and excellent video work from Paul. - Jerry M.
